Bar/Restaurant in Manly
The Sugar Lounge in Manly is a very chilled place to come at anytime during the day. It is situated along the beachfront on the North Steyne. From wandering past many times at different times during the day, I definitely feel it is a good place to come as a solo traveller. I noticed that there were often people on their own as well as couples and groups of friends.
The Sugar Lounge is a Tiki themed bar/restaurant, with dining tables to the side of the bar. The the front of the bar is a seating area with a mixture of comfortable wicker type chairs with big cushions or tables with high stools. There is also additional seating outside.
The front of the restaurant is completely open with amazing views. This was great as a solo traveller because I was able to sit here and look out at the beach, watch the surfers in the ocean or the passers by. I much prefer to do this when I am dining or drinking alone rather than being in the middle of a restaurant or bar.
Breakfasts, lunches and evening meals are served here. But it is also a great place to come just for a coffee during the day or for a drink early evening. At night, the restaurant feels as if it has transformed from a cafe/restaurant into a cocktail lounge. Cocktails are great but are priced at between $15-23 so worth checking the board to see what time their daily happy hour is. It was between 4pm-8pm while I was there.
The menu offers a good selection of food including pizzas and burgers, such as The Big Kahuna, with smoked cheddar, maple bacon, pickles and house sauce. The salads are an alternative, lighter, option. The Big Island sounded good… bbq chicken, mango & roasted almonds with mixed leaves and tamarind vinegar, reasonably priced at $19. Watch out for the daily specials too. When I visited, burgers cost $12 – a bargain! The night I was here, I wasn’t very hungry so just had a side of fries. They were very tasty! Crisp on the outside and soft in the middle, served with sour cream and sweet chilli!
I went along one evening and there was an ‘open mic’ night. It wasn’t really my kind of music but as a solo traveller, it was nice to have something to watch while I was there. There is often entertainment here so worth asking the staff what’s going during your stay in Manly.
Would I Return?
Yes I would definitely return to the Sugar Lounge in Manly! In my opinion, it is a great place with a good vibe. It is a relaxed, informal place to visit as a solo traveller.
