Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolò, Florence

This was my favourite restaurant from my solo trip to Florence. An Italian gem which uses fresh ingredients and good quality meat. It offers a relaxed outdoor (Mar-Nov) or indoor dining experience. Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolò is the perfect place to replenish your energy with traditional Tuscan food, following the steep walk up to Piazza Michelangelo. At the bottom of the steps on the way back down, the restaurant, on a corner position, catches your eye with its golden glow. You may have to wait for a table but, it will be worth it.

Dining area

There is a small indoor area and an additional outdoor area. Both are good for solo dining. I prefer dining outside wherever possible and was offered a table outdoors after a short wait. It was a mild day but the heaters made it very comfortable as the temperatures dipped later on.

Food and Drink

The menu was completely in Italian. Many of the traditional, local dishes are served here such as:

  • Ribollita
  • Lampredotto con funghi porcini
  • Bistecca alla fiorentina
  • Patate arrosto

Side dishes are priced at Euros 6, antipasti and starters from Euros 10 and mains from Euros 14. A selection of red and white wines were available and cost Euros 4 or 5.

I chose the finocchiona e burrata con pane tostado – a type of salami flavoured with fennel and burrata served with toasted bread. The burrata was incredibly creamy. Once you cut through the mozzarella, the cream oozed out ….delicious!

Service and Staff

Staff were very attentive, spoke excellent English and, as the menu was in Italian without translation, they were very happy to translate for you. Staff were very knowledgeable about the dishes being offered and service was prompt. The meal offered very good value for money. My dish cost Euros 10 and was more than I could eat.

Would I Return?

I would definitely return to Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolò on my next visit to Florence. It would be great to try one of the traditional Tuscan dishes which, unfortunately, I didnt have room for on this occasion! I have never tasted cheese quite like the burrata I had, it was exquisite!
