1-5 Wheat Rd, Sydney NSW 2000 – Open daily from 10am-6pm (Last admission 5pm)
How to Get Here
From Circular Quay, pick up one of the ferries and admire the views while it makes its way to Darling Harbour. The aquarium isn’t that big but you are guaranteed a fascinating couple of hours.
Tickets are cheaper if you purchase them online, around $35 (Nov 18) for an adult. However, if you are planning on visiting another attraction, such as Wild Life Sydney, Madame Tussauds or Sydney Tower Eye, then buy a combined ticket. It will work out much cheaper that way rather than buying tickets individually. 2 tickets costs $50 and the second attraction can be used the next day if you prefer. Alternatively, purchase 3 tickets for $60 or 4 for $70. These can be used within 30 days from the date of purchase.
The aquarium is made up of several different zones:
Little Penguins are fun to watch at the South Coast Shipwreck zone. The Sydney Harbour zone allows you to see marine life native to this famous harbour. Look out for the Queensland Groper and the grey nurse shark at Shark Walk.
Feel the icy cold air as you take a raft ride through the Gentoo and King penguin exhibit.
Factual information is next to the exhibits so you can learn about the marine life as well as watch it. Some of the facts are very interesting. I learnt that the wrasse is a fish that can change sex from female to male and that the estuarine stonefish is the most venomous fish on the planet. The dugong is one of the highlights at the aquarium and I was surprised to learn he ploughs his way through 80kg of lettuce… per day!!
Feeding Times and Talks
Check feeding times and talks when you arrive so you don’t miss out on something of interest. The talks are short and enjoyable.
Would I Return?
I have visited many aquariums and this one doesn’t disappoint. Sea Life Sydney Aquarium is located in a central position in Darling Harbour close to other attractions, restaurants and the fish markets. It is a wonderful place to take your time and wander at your own pace as a solo traveller. It offers good value for money especially with one of the combination tickets. I would definitely return here. In fact, the only negative, in my opinion, was the coffee from the cafe. Coffee in Sydney is outstanding on the whole but I will make sure to buy one before I enter next time.
