Restaurant in Hunter Valley
After a wonderful day on a wine tasting tour, visiting several vineyards we went back to our hotel resort, Pokolbin Village. We were told that there were a few nearby dining options available if we wanted to stay relatively local. We were tired, so that suited us just fine! Reception told us that if we dined at Blaxland Inn, just a 5 minute walk away, as residents of Pokolbin Village we would be entitled to a free glass of wine each. We decided to do that.
The walk to the restaurant involves walking through a very uneven grass area, so not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. The alternative is to walk along the main road, or call Blaxland Inn and they send a courtesy bus to collect you. This is also available to take you back to the hotel afterwards, if required.
The restaurant was large with several dining sections to it. It was nicely decorated, had an open fire for the chilly nights and an outdoor area for the warm ones!
The menu offered lots of gluten free dishes. The majority of the entrees were fish based or vegetarian, with one meat option. Entrees included roast baby beetroots with walnuts, goats cheese, smoked capsicum and cherry tomatoes. This cost $18. Roast sweet potato salad with rocket, pine nuts, pear and marinated feta was another option also at $18. As tempting as the dishes were, we didn’t feel hungry enough so settled on main course only.
The main courses were mostly meat options, with the exception of one salmon dish and one vegetarian dish. I chose the Scotch steak with sweet potato gratin and peppercorn sauce. This was priced at $36 and is the equivalent of our fillet steak in the UK.
Unfortunately when they brought the steak out, they had served it with mashed potato by mistake and red wine jus rather than peppercorn sauce. I decided to eat it anyway as I was too tired to wait for them to cook my meal again. It had been a long day! However, I wasn’t able to eat the steak at all. It was the fattiest piece of meat I had ever had. I could barely cut it with my steak knife!
The Manager came over as he noticed I hadn’t touched my food. He spoke with the waitress concerned and apologised for her running the incorrect food through the till and took the price of my meal off the bill. He was very concerned I hadn’t had enough to eat and that the meal had been poor. I felt the Manager dealt with the situation well.
Would I Return?
Unfortunately, because of the quality of the steak, I would not return to this restaurant on another occasion. The mash and the red wine jus were actually delicious so I may have just been unlucky with the steak. Regarding coming here as a solo traveller, it would have been a very good place to come. The tables were spread out which was good. I don’t like dining alone when the tables are too close together, it makes me feel self conscious. The courtesy bus is also a positive if you are on your own as well.
