Dickenson Bay, Starfish Halcyon Cove, All inclusive resort, 3 star, West Coast of Antigua, Antigua, Caribbean, solo holiday, solo travel, reviews
Starfish Halcyon Cove Resort

A 3* all inclusive resort on arguably one of the best beaches in Antigua, Dickenson Bay. In my opinion, the hotel is now in need of refurbishment but there are many positives this hotel has to offer a solo traveller.

My Accommodation – Poolside Room

My room was very tired.  However, the king size bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was a good size with bath and overhead shower, fridge, safe, airconditioning unit and doors to an outdoor patio area with table and chairs.

Restaurants

The Arawak Terrace

Breakfast and evening meals are served here.  The restaurant is on the first floor (no lift or ramp so not suitable for those with wheelchairs) and is a self-serve buffet.

Breakfast

I found the cooked food at breakfast to be very greasy and off putting and there was limited fruit on offer.  Cereal, toast and eggs/omelettes were also available.  Fish was being served one morning but after half an hour of waiting, it still wasn’t ready, so I gave up waiting and left!

Evening

In the evening, Arawak Terrace felt incredibly hot and airless in my opinion.  On the occasions I went there, I couldn’t eat my food fast enough so I could leave.  The food was of average standard I would say.  There was soup and salad available for starters,  a few meat, fish, vegetable, potato and rice dishes to choose from for the main course, followed by a selection of desserts.

Snack Bar/Grill

At lunch time, a selection of burgers, chicken, fish, chips, rice and salad are served here.  Help yourself to food, take it to your table and the waitress will come over to take your drinks order.

Sometimes food is served here in the evening, buffet style, which is nice.  It is much cooler and you can listen to the entertainment at the same time.

Warri Pier

If you would like to be waited on and have a more formal dinner in a relaxed, environment then, Warri Pier is open a few times each week.  The restaurant is on stilts in the ocean.

The majority of the menu is included on the all inclusive plan, though there is a surcharge for some dishes, such as steak and lobster.

Beach

Dickenson Bay is a long stretch of powdery, white sand, with crystal clear water.  The sunsets from this beach are stunning.  There are bars, eateries and a vendor’s mall along the beach as well as beach vendor’s trying to sell you their wares.

Facilities

Pool

There is a small pool with sun loungers around.  Mosquitos became a bit of a problem around 4pm when I stayed here in July, but it may have just been the time of year?

Watersports

Non-motorised watersports such as kayaks, snorkelling and paddleboats, are available from the desk on the beach

Tennis Courts

Tennis courts are available for use, although I did not use them.

Entertainment

Daytime activities and games are arranged if you wish to join in.

Evening entertainment was low key.  There was a good band one evening, a steel band another, twice there was a DJ and one evening there was not any entertainment at all.

Staff

The staff here are wonderful.  Some have been here for a very long time.  Fenton is absolutely fantastic and the guests love him.  He is the life and soul of the resort.

Would I Return?

I really want to.  There are so many positives here for a solo holiday.  The beach is amazing, the staff are friendly, there are activities to get involved in should you wish and I was aware of other solo travellers during my stay in July.  However, the resort is now in need of modernising and the food needs improvement in the Arawak Terrace.  Since my visit, Starfish have taken over the resort, so it will be interesting to see what changes are made.  I will keep an eye on this because I would love to return here.
