En Copa de Balon, Plaza Mayor
En Copa de Balon, Plaza Mayor, Madrid
En Copa de Balon is a relaxed restaurant in historic Plaza Mayor with a choice of indoor or terrace dining. Located in a corner position of the square, it benefits from direct views of the statue of King Phillipe III and one of the finest examples of architecture in Madrid, Casa de la Panaderia.

Seating areas at En Copa de Balon
The menu offers a good selection of traditional Spanish tapas. A premium is charged for sitting outside on the terrace. However, it is worth it to soak up the plaza’s atmosphere enjoy the views. For example, a dish priced at Euros 4 to eat inside, costs Euros 5.50 to eat outside. That said, the portions are a good size and offer good value for money even at the higher price.

The much talked about squid sandwich, bocadillo de calamares is well worth sampling. Crunchy baguettes are filled with rings of succulent, piping hot squid, cooked to perfection. The generous portion was more than I could eat. Together with a cup of coffee, the bill came to less than Euros 10.

Service at En Copa de Balon
The waiter was polite, friendly and spoke good English. My order was taken promptly and food served without too much of a wait. However, nobody came to check if everything was ok with my food or offer another drink. It was also difficult to get someone’s attention for the bill afterwards. Eventually, I caught someone’s attention to ask for the bill but, after 10 mins, had to ask again as they had forgotten.
Would I Return?
Even though the service was slow, I really enjoyed the food and drink I had here and it offered good value for money. The seating area was great for solo dining and in a prime position on the Plaza Mayor.
