There are several ways of travelling from Cagliari Airport to Villasimius. Here are 5 recommended options…
The Villasimius Express is a shuttle bus service which runs from Cagliari airport to Villasimius, stopping at various places along the way. The journey takes around an hour or so. The bus picks you up outside the Tourist Information office which is within the airport terminal.
Tickets need to be purchased in advance online or over the telephone. If you are travelling alone it costs Euros 30 one way because on booking, it will only accept a minimum of 2 paying people for every reservation.
On arrival at Villasimius, you can then get a taxi to your designated hotel. I stayed at the highly recommended Hotel Cala Caterina, approximately 20 minutes drive away and this cost Euros 15 from the town centre, to give you an idea of how much it is likely to be.
2. Train to Cagliari and then catch a bus
As you exit baggage reclaim, buy a train ticket to Cagliari costing Euro 1.30. The machine is just to the left of the Tourist Information desk and you can select your preferred language to purchase your one way ticket. Follow the clear signage to the train station from within the terminal building.
Platform 1 serviced clean and air conditioned trains, that run frequently into Cagliari, taking just 7 minutes. As you leave the station at Cagliari, opposite is a bus station (ARST) where coaches will take you directly to Villasimius. Tickets need to be purchased from the ticket office near the station’s exit, rather than on the bus. The cost of this, I was told by Tourist Information, is less than 10 Euros.
Once in Villasimius, again, you can get a taxi to your designated hotel. There is a timetable for the buses to Villasimius and they are not always that frequent so check ARST’s website for up to date information. Times may also be subject to change during the winter months. Unfortunately there was a long queue to buy a ticket so I would have had a 4 hour wait for the next bus. As I had a suitcase in tow, I decided to get a taxi, as the rank is directly outside the station.
3. Arrange a transfer via your hotel from Cagliari Airport to Villasimius
Prior to departure, it is worth contacting your hotel to see if they have organised transport to collect you from the airport. Some hotels offer a shuttle service. If not, they should tell you how much they would charge to arrange for a driver to collect you from the airport.
4. Taxi from Cagliari Airport to Villasimius
Purchase your train ticket and travel to Cagliari as in point 2 at a cost of Euro 1.30. Directly outside the station is a taxi rank. My taxi cost Euros 70. He was a lovely driver, very friendly and stopped every now and then so I could take photographs. His English was limited but a couple of times he used google translate to communicate with me when I asked him questions.
5. Car Hire
For me, I found this very daunting as I have never driven a car overseas before (I really need to get out of my comfort zone and do this!). However, hindsight is a wonderful thing and apart from the airport part of the journey being busy and possibly a little confusing, on leaving the airport the dual carriageways were fairly quiet. There are no motorways in Sardinia either. There are several car hire companies to choose from. Europcar, for example, charge upwards of around £160 for a small car for 7 nights.
