I thoroughly enjoyed my solo holiday to Villasimius in Sardinia recently. It is the perfect destination to go to if you are looking to ‘get away from it all’ for a while and have a few days of pure indulgence! The numerous beaches are stunning and unspoilt, the landscape is breathtaking and the food is first class. There are many luxurious hotels to choose from including the highly recommended Hotel Cala Caterina. If this is a consideration then here are some travel tips for Hotel Cala Caterina you should be aware of that may be useful…
Top solo travel tips for Hotel Cala Caterina
1. Consider car hire or bring extra cash for Taxis
Hire a car or bring extra cash for to allow for some taxi fares if you want to explore the local area. Although when you look at google maps, the local attractions and beaches appear to be within walking distance, the main roads do not have footpaths, just a grass/mud verge to the left hand side of the white lines in the road. It is really only ok to walk along these roads in good weather and in daylight. I imagine it gets muddy and slippery when it rains. There is a shuttle bus a short walk away but it only runs once an hour.
2. Lunch at Hotel Cala Caterina
I found it impossible to have a small lunch at this hotel as the dishes are big enough to share! The food is absolutely superb but the portions are enormous. I ordered a salad one day as I thought that would be a lighter option but … So if you are saving yourself for one of the hotel’s excellent 4 course meals in the evening, you may want to rethink your lunch choice.
3. Dinner at Hotel Cala Caterina
Dinner at Hotel Cala Caterina is 4 courses if you are staying on a half board basis. Again, due to the portion sizes, I over ordered on my first night and was very embarrassed that I could not eat my main course. Rather than ordering all 4 courses at once with the waiter, I learnt that it was better to order an appetiser and a starter to begin with. This was actually plenty of food for me. But if I still felt hungry, I could then order a main course without leaving lots of food.
4. Snorkelling Equipment/Goggles
Spiaggia Cala Caterina is a beautiful sandy bay with crystal clear water full of fish. Unfortunately I did not take my snorkelling equipment and I really wish I had. Make sure you bring googles or a snorkel as there is quite a lot to see and a few other beaches nearby also where snorkelling is recommended. I wasn’t aware of anywhere to hire equipment.
5. Bring Insect Repellant
There were quite a lot of flies around during the day which become quite irritating when relaxing or eating outdoors. There were also quite a few mosquitos around of an evening. Make sure you bring some sort of repellant with you.
6. The Airport Names
It is worth noting that sometimes Sardinian airports are known by more than one name. It may come in useful when looking at signposts and reading maps etc.
- Cagliari Airport is also known as Cagliari Elmas Airport and Aeroporto Mario Mameli
- Olbia Airport is also known as Olbia Costa Smerelda Airport
- Alghero Airport is also known as Fertilia Airport

8. Shop around for prices
At the time of booking I checked the price of the hotel on the website and then compared it to Trivago. I was surprised that booking with Trivago was substantially cheaper and also included half board rather than bed and breakfast. Make sure you shop around for prices before booking.
